Summer Punch Cards for Kids {Free Printables!}

June 9, 2016

Summer Punch Cards for Kids

Many kids are already out of school for the summer, and the rest will be home soon. It’s a great time of year — but keeping kids motivated and engaged for 75+ days is no small thing!

I’ve been trying to find an easy, fun way to track summer reading and deal with some “sisterly fighting” and two kids who suddenly have zero interest in helping around the house. We’ve done sticker charts. We’ve done allowance. I wanted something new that would actually catch their attention.

So we’re trying punch cards this summer!

Why We Started Using Punch Cards This Summer

I am personally very motivated by punch cards. I earn free coffee and free ice cream at our town shops pretty quickly (maybe a little too motivated for those…) and I had a feeling the kids would be too.

Punch cards are such a simple way to get kids excited about working toward something. They can see their progress. They know what they’re working toward. And when that card gets full? So satisfying.

How We Use Summer Punch Cards in Our House

We are working on three things: reading books, helping out around the house (mainly cleaning up after themselves), and being nice to each other.

I also polled some awesome moms in town about themes and how many punches to put on each card. Some mentioned their kids were working on more specific things, like trying new foods, so I designed some generic cards with extra room to write in whatever works for your family!

Three cards print to a sheet and at 100% they are pretty large. Scale them down if you want smaller cards. For older kids, you could even print them small enough to fit in their wallet — they think that’s pretty cool!

You can also print them large and use them as a poster to hang and check off instead of punching. Up to you!

9 Reasons Summer Punch Cards Work So Well for Kids

  1. They encourage goal setting. Kids can see exactly what they need to do to earn the reward they want. That sense of purpose is really good for them — and it carries over into other areas of their lives too.
  2. They promote responsibility. Punch cards get kids completing tasks and chores on their own. Great for teaching them about taking care of their things and contributing to the family.
  3. They give kids a sense of accomplishment. Every punch is visible progress! Watching the card fill up is such a confidence booster.
  4. They encourage creativity. Add things like art, music, or writing to the card and kids get to develop those skills in a really low-pressure way.
  5. They add some structure. Summer is so unstructured compared to the school year, which can actually feel overwhelming for some kids. A punch card gives them something consistent to work toward.
  6. They’re great for family bonding. Add in activities you do together — a family hike, a board game night — and the punch card becomes about making memories too.
  7. They keep kids moving. Throw in a bike ride, shooting hoops, or a trip to the park. Easy way to keep kids active without it feeling like a requirement.
  8. They teach time management. Encouraging kids to work toward completing activities over the summer keeps them thinking about pacing — a great skill before school kicks back in.
  9. They’re just fun. Honestly this might be the most important one. They can be completely customized to fit each kid, which makes the whole thing feel exciting instead of like a chore list.

Rewards for Completing the Punch Cards

In our house we’re going with things the kids already ask for all summer — ice cream at the pool, staying late at the pool, and a few others I’m still working on!

That’s also why I made some with 20 punches and some with 10. Depending on the reward, you can decide how hard they have to work for it.

Other Reward Ideas

  • Candy
  • Ice Cream
  • Extended Bedtime (Or option to sleep in)
  • Extra Screen Time
  • Trip to the beach, pool, or park
  • Books
  • Pick Dinner one night.
  • Art Supplies

Tips for Printing Your Summer Punch Cards

  • Print on card stock — it holds up so much better, especially if they’re actually punching the card!
  • Adjust the scale when printing depending on how large you want them.
  • Want to reuse them? Print large, laminate, and use a dry erase marker to check off instead of punching.

Frequently Asked Questions About Summer Punch Cards for Kids

What are summer punch cards for kids? Summer punch cards are simple reward charts where kids earn a punch each time they complete a task. Once the card is full, they earn a prize. Kids can see their progress building and have something specific to work toward — which makes all the difference!

What age do punch cards work best for? A really wide range! Younger kids love watching their card fill up, and older kids get into it when the prize is something they actually want. Just adjust the number of punches and the reward based on age.

What should kids earn punches for? Totally up to your family! We use ours for reading, helping around the house, and being kind to each other. Other popular ideas: trying new foods, practicing an instrument, going outside for a set amount of time, or completing a random act of kindness.

How many punches should be on the card? It depends on the reward! We made versions with 10 punches for smaller rewards or younger kids, and versions with 20 for bigger prizes. The bigger the reward, the more they should have to work for it!

What are good rewards for completing a punch card? Keep it simple and make it something they actually care about. Ice cream, a pool trip, extra screen time, picking dinner — all great options. For a full card, something like a water park day or a sleepover feels really special.

Do I need a hole punch to use these? Nope! A marker works just fine. You can also laminate them and use a dry erase marker if you want to reuse them over and over.
